A P-type semiconductor has acceptor levels 57 meV above the valence band. The maximum wavelength of light required to create a hole is (h=Planck's constant )  ?

To create a hole an electron must be given energy at least equal to 57 mev to go into acceptor level.

 

 \frac{hc}{\lambda }\geq 57 mev \Rightarrow \lambda \leq \frac{hc}{57} mev \Rightarrow \frac{1242 ev.nm}{57*10^{-3}ev}

 

=2.18*10^{-5}m
