As we have learned

Thermal Stress in terms of young modulus -

thermal\: stress= Y\: \alpha \: \Delta T\:

- wherein

\Delta T= Change \: in \: temp.

\alpha = Co-efficient\: of\: linear\: expansion

 

 Since rod is free to expand , hence no strain will be developed in the rod => stress = 0
