Term alum is given to double sulhates of the type M_{2}SO_{4}\cdot M_{2}^{1}\left ( SO_{4} \right )_{3}\cdot 24H_{2}O

M=univalent cation like Na+, K+ and NH4+

M1 = trivalent cation like Al3+, Fe3+ and Cr3+
