g=\frac{Gm_{e}}{r^{2}}

G = Gravitational constant

m_{e} = mass of earth

r = radius of earth

At height h, acceleration due to gravity is

a_{g}=\frac{Gm_{e}}{(r+h)^{2}}

if  

a_{g}=g/2

\frac{Gm_{e}}{(r+h)^{2}} = \frac{Gm_{e}}{2r^{2}}

\Rightarrow  2r^{2}=(r+h)^{2}

\Rightarrow h= r(\sqrt{2}-1)
