For a given reaction:
\mathrm{aA+bB+cC\rightarrow }Products
By experiment, Rate of reaction (r):

\mathrm{ r \propto[A]^x[B]^y[C]^z }
Overall order of the reaction is :
(x+y+z)

x : Order w.r.t reactant A
y : Order w.r.t reactant B
z : Order w.r.t reactant \mathrm{ C }  Here,
x, y, z are experimentally determined quantities x may or may not be equal to a
y may or may not be equal to b
z may or may not be equal to c
So, overall order may or may not be equal to (a+b+c).
