As we learnt

Length of compound microscope -

L= v_{o}+u_{e}

v_{o}= Image distance from objective.

u_{e}= Object distance from eyepiece

 f_{0} = 2 cm    f_{e} = 3cm

l = 15cm

Final image formed at infinity hence image formed by objective is at focal point of eyepiece

u_{e}=f_{e}=3cm

v_{o}= l-f_{e}=12cm

For objective:

v_{o}=12cm                        f_{o}=2cm

\frac{1}{v_{0}}-\frac{1}{u_{0}}=\frac{1}{f_{0}}

\frac{1}{12}-\frac{1}{u_{0}}=\frac{1}{2}

or

\frac{1}{u_{0}}=\frac{1}{12}-\frac{1}{2}=\frac{1-6}{12}

or,

 u_{0}=-2.4cm                v_{0}=12cm
