Carbonic acid buffer system -

CO2 forms H2CO3 in water which dissociates and form buffer system, that helps in maintaining pH of blood (7.26 to 7.42)

- wherein

H_{2}CO_{3}+H_{2}O\rightleftharpoons HCO_{3}^{-}+H_{3}O^{+}

HCO_{3}^{-}+H_{2}O\rightleftharpoons CO_{3}^{2-}+H_{3}O^{+}

 Buffer system of blood is maintain by HCO3- and  H2CO3 .

H_{2}CO_{3}\rightleftharpoons H^{+}+ HCO_{3}^{-}
