The shape of ClF_{3} is

Option: 1

Square planar

Option: 2

Trigonal planar

Option: 3

T-shape

Option: 4

Tetrahedral

Answers (1)

ClF_{3}:-

X \text { (steric Number) }=\frac{1}{2} \text { [ valence electrons} \text { of Cl }+\text { no. of monovalent atoms] }

                              =\frac{1}{2}\left [ 7+3 \right ]=5=sp^{3}d\textup{ (hybridisation)}

Over here, you can see there are 3-F-atoms so it means 3 bond pairs.

\because Steric Number =5

\therefore lone pair of e^{-}= steric number- no. of bonds formed

                            5-3=2

That means:- ClF_{3} has :- 3 bond pairs & 2- lone pairs

Geometry= Trigonal bipyramidal

But \because it has 2 lone pairs of \bar{es} \therefore geometry \neq  shape

Shape is T- shape

Hence, option number (3) is correct.
