Chemical Properties of Elements -

Nature of Hydrides

Hydrides are basically the compounds with hydrogen atom or atoms and some other element.

In a period, the nature of hydrides changes from basic to acidic in moving from left to right.

NH3

H2O

HF

Weak base

Neutral

Weak acid

In a group, the acidic nature of hydrides increases in moving from top to bottom. Thus,

HI > HBr > HCl > HF

Water is a neutral hydride. The bonds in water (hydroxide ion bound to a hydrogen ion) are stronger than the sulfide and hydrogen ion bonds. An acid always gives up a hydrogen ion (or multiple H+ions). H2S is acidic while H2O is neutral.

Therefore, Option(2) is correct
