A  train reach a station at a certain time and at a fixed speed. If the train had been 6 km/hr faster, it would have taken 4 hours less than the scheduled time. And, If the train were slower by 6 km/hr, the would have taken 6 hours more than the scheduled time. The length of journey is :

  • Option 1)

    700

  • Option 2)

    720

  • Option 3)

    740

  • Option 4)

let the original speed is :- xkm/hr

and let the scheduled time is :- t

formula :- Distance = Speed * Time => d = x * t  ---(1) equation

If the train had been 6 km/hr faster, it would have taken 4 hours less than the scheduled time.

According to this :- d = (x+6)*(t-4) => xt-4x+6t-24------(2)equation

substituting equation (1) and (2)

xt = xt-4x+6t-24

xt-xt+4x-6t+24=0

6t-4x=24 -------------(3)equation

 If the train were slower by 6 km/hr, the would have taken 6 hours more than the scheduled time.

According to this :- d = (x-6)*(t+6) => xt+6x-6t-36------(4)equation

substituting equation (1) and (4)

xt = xt+6x-6t-36

xt-xt-6x+6t+36=0

6t-6x=-36 -------------(5)equation

from equation(3) and (5) we get :-

6t-4x = 24

6t-6x = -36

--------------------

2x = 60 => x= 30

Put this x vale in equation(3) or (5) , we get

6t-4(30) = 24

6t - 120 = 24

6t = 120+24

6t = 144

t = 144/6

t = 24

now we have the value of speed and time :-

distance = speed * time

distance = 30*24

The length of journey is : 720km
