Reproduction, Development and Metagenesis in Cnidaria -

  • The reproduction occurs through both asexual and sexual means.
  • Budding is the common method of asexual reproduction.
  • Sexual reproduction occurs through the formation of gametes.
  • Cnidarians exhibit metagenesis, i.e., alternation of generation. There are two body forms:
  • Polyp: It is fixed and sessile form with mouth and tentacles facing upwards. It reproduces asexually by budding to form the second body form.
  • Medusa: It is free-floating form with mouth and tentacles facing downwards. It reproduces sexually to form polyps.
