There are seven types of chlorophylls:
- Chlorophyll a: Universal pigment present in all oxygen-evolving photosynthetic organisms. Its chemical formula is C55H72O5N4Mg. It has -CH3 group.
- Chlorophyll b: It is present in higher plants and green algae. Its chemical formula is C55H70O6N4Mg. It has -CHO group.
- Chlorophyll c: It is present in brown algae and diatoms. It does not have a phytol tail.
- Chlorophyll d: It is present in red algae.
- Chlorophyll e: It is present in yellow-green algae.
- Bacteriochlorophyll: It is present in purple sulphur bacteria.
- Bacterioviridin: It is present in green sulphur bacteria.
