Overview of the Process of Respiration -

Respiration involves the following steps:

  • Breathing or pulmonary ventilation by which atmospheric air is drawn in and CO2  rich alveolar air is released out. It is also called gaseous exchange by lungs.
  • Diffusion of gases (O2 and CO2) across the alveolar membrane. This is called external respiration.
  • Transport of gases by the blood.
  • Diffusion of O2 and CO2 between blood and tissues. This is called internal respiration.
  • The utilisation of O2 by the cells for catabolic reactions and resultant release of CO2. this is called cellular respiration.

Hence the correct option is diffusion of gases (O2 and CO2) across the alveolar membrane
