  • Cyanobacteria possess heterocysts which are thick-walled cells that are found in terminal, intercalary or lateral positions. It is involved in nitrogen fixation.
  • The thick wall of the heterocyst is impermeable to oxygen but permeable to nitrogen. 
  • Examples: Spirulina ( highly proteinaceous superfood ), Nostoc, Oscillatoria, Anabaena and Rivularia etc.
