Operation of transcriptional pull theory -

Water lost from leaf surface by transpiration results in increase of DPD in leaf cells, which results in low water potential in the cells. These cells take water from adjoining cells and DPD of adjoining cells increases. This process is repeated and results in continuous water column from root to leaves.
