Class Osteichthyes - Characteristics Features -

 

  • These fishes have a bony skeleton.
  • They have a large mouth with movable jaws.
  • Their body is covered with cycloid or ctenoid scales. These scales are impermeable to water. 
  • The gill slits are covered with an operculum.
  • They have a closed circulatory system with two-chambered heart having one atrium and one ventricle.
  • They possess air bladder or swim bladder that maintains the buoyancy. 
  • They have defined lateral line system of sense organs.
  • They are cold - blooded.
  • They are oviparous and perform external fertilization.
     

Osteichthyes have cycloid scale and their tail is homocercal while means it appears  symmetrical from outside and the vertebral column passes into the upper lobe of the tail.
