Regulation of Respiration -
- The respiratory centre is composed of groups of neurons located in the medulla oblongata and pons varolii.
- Therefore, the respiratory centre is divided into medullary and pons respiratory centres.
- Excess CO2 or hydrogen ions stimulate the respiratory centres of the brain and increase the inspiratory and expiratory signals to the respiratory muscles.
Medullary Respiratory Centres:
- Dorsal Respiratory Centres (DRC): It is located in the dorsal portion of the medulla oblongata. It causes inspiration.
- Ventral Respiratory Centres (VRC): It can cause both inspiration and expiration.
Pons Respiratory Centres:
- Pneumotaxic centre: It is located in the ventrolateral part of the medulla oblongata. Its function is to limit inspiration.
