The digestive system of a Cockroach

  • The digestive system consists of the alimentary canal which is divided into three regions i.e. foregut, midgut and hindgut.

Foregut

  • Foregut includes a buccal chamber with a mouth on one side and a pharynx on the another.
  • It also includes the oesophagus, crop and gizzard. 
  • The mouth opens into a short pharynx, leading to a narrow tubular passage called the oesophagus.
  • Oesophagus opens into a sac-like structure called a crop.
  • The crop is the largest part of the foregut and its function is to store food.
  • The crop is followed by gizzard or proventriculus. It is small, cone-shaped and muscular.
  • Gizzards possess thick inner cuticles in the form of six highly chitinous plates called teeth.
  • The major function of gizzards is to grind the food particles.
  • The entire foregut is lined by cuticles.
  • The junction of the foregut and midgut consists of a ring of 6-8 blind tubules called hepatic or gastric caeca. 
  • The function of hepatic caeca is the secretion of digestive juices.

Salivary glands

  • These are the chief digestive glands of cockroaches
  • They have paired structures that lie on each side of the oesophagus and crop.
  • These secrete saliva which contains mucus, amylase, chitinase and cellulase
     

-Crop is the largest part of the foregut and its function is to store the food.
