Rules for Oxidation Number -

The algebraic sum of the oxidation number of all the atoms in a compound must be zero. In a polyatomic ion, the sum is equal to the charge on the ion.

 O.N.(Sn) = +2

O.N.(Cl) = +7

O.N.(O) = -2

\therefore 2.O.N.(Cl)+O.N.(Sn)+8O.N(O)

=2(7)+2-8(2)=0
