Simple Permanent Tissues: Collenchyma

  • Collenchyma is the simple permanent tissue having more or less elongated cells with primary non-lignified cell wall.
  • Their cell walls are their distinctive features that show uneven thickenings.
  • They have a highly vacuolated cytoplasm. 
  • These are effective mechanical tissues and provide elasticity to the plant parts.
  • They show a unique pattern of distribution as follows:
  • Present only in dicots
  • Present only in shoot
  • Present only in hypodermis
  • Never present in monocots
  • Never present in roots
  • Never present in underground stem
  • They have a polygonal shape. 
  • These are the living tissues in the plant body.
