Cnidocytes / Cnidoblast -

  • The cnidocytes are the stinging cells present in the body wall of the cnidarians.
  • Each cnidocyte contains an organelle called nematocyst.
  • Nematocyst consists of chitinous barb which is filled with the hypnotoxin.
  • A thread like structure is attached to the barb.
  • The outer wall of the cnidocyte has a touch-sensitive projection called cnidocil.
  • When touched, the thread is fired from the cnidocyte and coils around the prey.
  • The hypnotoxin is injected into the prey’s body.
