Cnidocytes / Cnidoblast -
- The cnidocytes are the stinging cells present in the body wall of the cnidarians.
- Each cnidocyte contains an organelle called nematocyst.
- Nematocyst consists of chitinous barb which is filled with the hypnotoxin.
- A thread like structure is attached to the barb.
- The outer wall of the cnidocyte has a touch-sensitive projection called cnidocil.
- When touched, the thread is fired from the cnidocyte and coils around the prey.
- The hypnotoxin is injected into the prey’s body.
