Cyanobacteria -
- Cyanobacteria are also known as blue-green algae are photosynthetic prokaryotes.
- They are considered to be the most ancient forms of algae.
- Cyanobacteria are found in all kinds of environments.
- They possess photosynthetic pigments like chlorophyll a, phycocyanin and carotenoids.
- Their reserve food material is cyanophycean starch.
- They are unicellular, colonial or filamentous organisms.
- Each filament remains covered in a mucilage covering.
- Flagella are absent in cyanobacteria.
- Cyanobacteria do not have chloroplasts. Photosynthesis takes place in membranous stacks called chromatophores.
- Cyanobacteria possess heterocysts which are thick-walled cells that are found in terminal, intercalary or lateral position. It is involved in the nitrogen fixation.
- Examples: Spirulina ( highly proteinaceous superfood ), Nostoc, Oscillatoria, Anabaena and Rivularia etc.
