Definition of Biomolecules

  • Biomolecules can be defined as the macromolecules that essentially form the constituents of a cell.
  • These macromolecules are made up of simpler inorganic molecules.
  • It implies that the process of polymerization of simple inorganic molecules results in the formation of macromolecules.
  • Biomolecules are organic, that is, they contain carbon, hydrogen and oxygen along with other inorganic molecules like nitrogen, sulphur, phosphorus, etc.
  • The collection of all the biomolecules, ions, and compounds in the cell is called the cellular pool.
  • The cellular pool can be divided into two phases:

(a).  Aqueous Phase: It consists of chemicals scattered in water. This phase can have a true solution or a colloidal solution. The true solution is formed when the chemicals are homogenized and the particle size is 1 nm or less. A colloidal solution is formed when the chemicals are heterogeneous and the particle size is 1 - 100 nm.
(b). Non-aqueous Phase: It consists of chemicals deposited in cellular structures like a cell membrane, cell wall etc.
