(a) A doctor conveyed to a couple after preforming a blood test on them that there is a possibility of their child being born with any one of the four blood groups i.e. A, B, AB or O. Write the genotypes of the parents and work out the cross to show how it is possible.
(b) Explain dominance and co-dominance with respect to the above cross.
a) Possibility of their child being born with any one of the four blood groups
A, B, AB ,O
Cross between IAi and IBi result in progeny -
IABA - AB blood group
IBi - B blood group
IAi - A blood group
ii - O blood group
b) Dominance- IA and IB are completely dominant over i, in other words when IA and i are present only IA expresses (because i does not produce any sugar), and when IB and i are present IB expresses. Co-dominance- When IA and IB are present together they both express their own types of sugars: this is because of co-dominance. Hence red blood cells have both A and B types of sugars.
