Analyse the effects of 'Alien species invasion' on the biodiversity of a given area. Provide two exaples.
Answers (1)
When alien species are introduced intentionally or deliberately some of them turn invasive, and cause destruction or decline or extinction of indigenous species.
Example -
- The Nile perch introduced into lake Victoria in east Africa led eventually to the extinction of an ecologically unique assemblage of more than 200 species of cichlid fish in the lake.
- The illegal introduction of African catfish Clarias gariepinus for aquaculture purpose is posing a threat to the indigenous catfishes to river.
