The opening scene of 'Merchant of Venice' is a masterpiece because the opening scene introduces us to the main characters in the story. It also unfolds the events of the story.

The main character of the story is Antonio the merchant. He is a rich merchant and in the opening scene we are also introduced to his friends. Bassanio is one among them who has the habit of spending money. He has borrowed a lot of money from Antonio and wasted a lot of it. Still, Antonio got ready to help Bassanio even when he had no money by signing the bond of taking money from a rival.

Antonio remains very sad his friends thinks that it is because of his anxiety over travelling abroad or that Antonio must be in love with someone. The opening scene is also important because it gives us a character sketch of the main characters of the story.
