On his voyage to Galapagos island, Darwin saw an amazing diversity of creatures he realized that there were many varieties of frinches in the same island itself. There were the original seed-eating finches, many of then had altered beaks and they became vegetarian finches.

He thus concluded that different groups of finches have developed traits that best suited their survival in the given geographical area. This process of evolution starting from a point and literally radiating to other areas of geography (habitats) is called adaptive radiation.
