Totipotency is the capacity to generate a whole plant from any cell/explant. The method of producing thousands of plants through tissue culture is called micropropagation as, each of these plants will be genetically identical to the original plant from which they are grown, thus called Somaclones.

The application of this method is the recovery of healthy plants (for example: banana) from the diseased plant (example: virus infected banana).

Although the plant is infected with the virus, the meristem is free from virus.

Hence, one can remove the meristem and grows it in vitro to obtain virus-free plants.
