It is possible to store pollen grains of a large of species for years in liquid nitrogen (-19^{\circ}C). This is called cryopreservation such stored pollen can be used as pollen banks, similar to seed banks in cropping breeding programmes.

These pollen banks are benefiting our farmers as:

  • stored pollen can be used for the production of hybridised crops.
  • stored pollen can be used for the production of disease resistant plants.
  • For the production of high yielding crops.
