Why is tobacco smoking associated with rise in blood pressure and emphysema ? Explain.
Tobacco contains a large number of chemical substances including nicotine, an alkaloid. Nicotine stimulates the adrenal gland to release adrenaline and nor-adrenaline into blood circulation, both of which raise blood pressure and increase heart rate.
Emphysema is the condition in which air sacs of the lungs get damaged, leading to breathing difficulties. Smoking can lead to emphysema because smoking releases a harmful gas called Carbon Mono-oxide which in turn leads to the low level of hemoglobin bound oxygen further leading to emphysema.
