An animal is categorized as oviparous and viviparous based on whether the development of the zygote takes place outside the body of female parent or inside, i.e., whether they lay fertilized/unfertilized eggs or give birth to young ones.

In oviparous organisms like reptiles and birds, the fertilized eggs covered by the hard calcareous shells are laid in a safe place in the environment, after a period of incubation young ones hatched out.

In viviparous organisms (human beings), the zygote develops into young ones inside the body of the female organism.
