7.18     Ethyl acetate is formed by the reaction between ethanol and acetic acid and the equilibrium is represented as:

               CH_{3}COOH_{(l)}+C_{2}H_{5}OH_{(l)}\rightleftharpoons CH_{3}COOC_{2}H_{5}_{(l)}+H_{2}O_{(l)}

(iii) Starting with 0.5 mol of ethanol and 1.0 mol of acetic acid and maintaining it at 293 K, 0.214 mol of ethyl acetate is found after sometime. Has equilibrium been reached?

Let the volume of the mixture will be V.
                                               CH_{3}COOH _{(l)}+C_{2}H_{5}OH_{(l)}\rightleftharpoons CH_{3}COOC_{2}H_{5}_{(l)}+H_{2}O_{(l)}
initial conc.                                     1/V                             0.5/V                          0                                   0

At equilibrium                          \frac{1-.214}{V}  (= 0.786/V)  \frac{1-.214}{V}               0.214                         0.214

Therefore the reaction quotient of the reaction-

Q_c = \frac{(0.214)^2}{(0.786)(0.286)}

        =0.2037 (approx)

Since Q_c<K_c equilibrium has not been reached.
