Explain why on the addition of 1 mol of NaCl to 1 litre of water, the boiling point of water increases, while the addition of 1 mol of methyl alcohol to one litre of water decreases its boiling point.

The boiling point of water increases with the addition of NaCl, as it is a non-volatile solute and, hence, reduces the vapour pressure of water and increases the boiling point. Unlike NaCl, methyl alcohol is more volatile than water and thus increases the vapour pressure of water and reduces the boiling point.
