Assume the number to be x.

Thus according to the question,

    \left ( x-\frac{1}{2} \right )\times \frac{1}{2} = \frac{1}{8}

 Multiplying both sides by 2, we get

  \left ( x-\frac{1}{2} \right ) = \frac{1}{8}\times 2 = \frac{1}{4}

Now transposing  -\frac{1}{2}  to the RHS, we get

     x = \frac{1}{4} + \frac{1}{2} = \frac{1+2}{4} = \frac{3}{4}

Thus the number was  x = 3/4
