Why is the ionisation enthalpy of hydrogen higher than that of sodium?

Answers (1)

Hydrogen has a higher ionisation enthalpy than sodium because sodium has a different configuration that is in the last shell; the electron is in 3s, which, if lost, resembles neon, which is the noble gas. However, with hydrogen, the case is different, and the electron is in the 1s orbital, which, on the other hand, does not amount to the attainment of a noble gas configuration.
