A farmer was using pesticides on his farm. He used the produce of his farm as food for rearing fish. He was told that fish were not fit for human consumption because a large amount of pesticides had accumulated in their tissues. Explain how did this happen?
Pesticides are synthetic toxic chemicals with ecological repercussions. Most organic toxins are non-biodegradable and water-insoluble. They are transferred from the lower tropic level to the higher tropic level because they are highly persistent. Over time, the concentration of toxins in higher animals increases and causes serious metabolic and physiological disorders. They enter the food chain and hence possess potential harms for human consumption.
