The cell is the smallest unit of living organisms and is capable of all life functions. These are the building blocks of life. That's why cells are referred to as the 'basic structure and functional unit of life'. A single cell can be a complete organism in itself for example bacteria and other microorganisms. These living beings can perform all the basic functions by themselves such as reproduction, digestion, excretion and others. They also show growth and metabolism. You can also find the same functions in multicellular organisms such as mammals and animals. But these are performed at a higher level. Hence, it is correct to say that "Cells are the basic structural units of living organisms".
