The role of coordination compounds in the medicine industry is huge, such as in the use of chelate therapy in medicinal chemistry. The excess copper and iron are removed by the chelating ligands D-penicillamine and desferrioxamine B via the formation of coordination compounds. Nowadays, some coordination compounds of platinum (such as cis-platin and related compounds) effectively inhibit the growth of tumours.
