No, for the state of spontaneity, the enthalpy change is not the only criteria. Entropy also needs to be taken into account here.

  • The change in entropy (ΔS) is the best indicator of a reaction's spontaneity. The Second Law of Thermodynamics states that a reaction is spontaneous if entropy increases. Entropy measures the amount of energy dispersed during a process. 

  • Enthalpy: Enthalpy is the sum of a system's internal energy, pressure, and volume. Enthalpy change (ΔH) can also increase or decrease randomness by affecting molecular motions.
