Silicon is heated with methyl chloride at high temperature in the presence of copper; as a catalyst at a temperature around 573K different types of methyl substituted chlorosilane are formed. for example-MeSiCl_3,Me_2SiCl_2,Me_3SiCl and a small amount of Me_4Si2CH_{3}Cl+Si\xrightarrow[Cu\ powder]{573K}(CH_{3})Si(Cl)_{2}\overset{hydrolysis}{\rightarrow}(CH_{3})_{2}Si(OH)_{2}
