Mass number of an atom is the sum total of the masses of all the nucleons present in the nucleus of an atom, i.e.,
Mass Number = No. of Protons + No. of Neutrons

It is denoted by A.


Example: As a sodium atom has 11 protons and 12 neutrons in its nucleus,

               So, it's mass number = 11 + 12 = 23.
