If the distance between the points (a, 2, 1) and (1, –1, 1) is 5, then a _______.

Answers (1)

Given points: (a,2,1,) & (1,-1,1)

\sqrt{(a-1)^{2}+(2+1)^{2}+(1-1)^{2}} =5  

(a-1)2 + 9 + 0 = 25

a2 – 2a – 15 = 0

(a-5)(a+3) = 0

Thus, a = -3 or a = 5
