Fill in the blanks

The probability of happening of an event A is 0.5 and that of B is 0.3. If A and B are mutually exclusive events, then the probability of neither A nor B is ________.

Answers (1)

Given:

P (happening of an event A) = 0.5

P (happening of an event B) = 0.3

A & B are mutually exclusive events

Thus, P (A ∩ B) = 0

To find: P (neither A nor B)

P\left ( \bar{A}\cap \bar{B} \right )=P\left ( \overline{ A \cup B} \right )

                  = 1 – P (A U B)

                  = 1 – [P (A) + P (B)]

                  = 1 – (0.5 + 0.3)

                  = 1 – 0.8

                  = 0.2
