The area of the shaded region is given by =   Area of the square - Area of two semicircles.

Area of square =\ 14^2\ =\ 196\ cm^2

The area of the semicircle  =\ \frac{1}{2}\pi r^2

=\ \frac{1}{2}\pi \times 7^2

=\ 77\ cm^2

Hence the area of the shaded region =\ 196 - 2(77) = 42\ cm^2.
