Find the values of x for which the functions

f (x) = 3x^2 - 1 \: \: and \: \: g (x) = 3 + x  are equal.

Given data: f (x) = 3x^2 - 1 \: \: and \: \: g (x) = 3 + x

Now, it is given that - f(x) = g(x),

Thus,  3x^2 - 1 = 3 + x

3x^2 - x - 4 = 0

3x^2 - 4x + 3x - 4 = 0

x(3x - 4) + 1(3x - 4) = 0

(3x - 4)(x + 1) = 0

3x - 4 = 0 \: \: or\: \: x + 1= 0

3x = 4 \: \: or\: \: x = -1

x = 4/3

Thus, -1 & 4/3 are the values of x.
