Butter is a saturated compound and oil is an unsaturated compound.
Test: When oil is added to a test tube containing alkaline potassium permanganate solution , the pink colour of the solution disappear.
Therefore, cooking oil causes decolourisation of the solution. This does not happen in case of butter.
