Secondary and tertiary amines can be distinguished by reacting them with Hinsberg's reagent which is also called benzenesulphonyl chloride.\left(\mathrm{C}_6 \mathrm{H}_5 \mathrm{SO}_2 \mathrm{Cl}\right) In the case of primary amine, the product is soluble in alkali but not in secondary amine case. And tertiary amine does not react with this reagent.

In the case of a secondary amine

Tertiary amine + benzene-sulphonyl chloride  \rightarrow no reaction
