The lungs are separated into bronchi, which further branch into bronchioles. These bronchioles terminate into very small balloon-like structures called Alveoli. The alveoli are tiny, round, balloon-shaped structures at the ends of the bronchioles, designed to increase surface area and optimize gas exchange in the lungs. An average adult lung contains approximately 480 million alveoli. The structure of alveoli resembles that of raspberries or a "grape."
