Phototropism is the movement of any part of the plant due to light. Positive phototropism is shown by the shoot of the plant and root shows negative phototropism. This phenomenon is due to the plant hormone, called auxin.

When light falls on the side of the plant, the auxin hormone shifts towards the other side, which is away from the light. Thus auxin causes growth is the length of the cells in the shady part. As a result, the plant appears to bend towards the sun.
