Variation in our characterstics occure due to sexual reproduction and inaccurate copying of DNA. The varied characterstics which fits for surviving passes on to the next generation more easily, and the characterstics which are not favorable for surviving will get vanish after some generation.
Favourable variations help a species to adapt to changes in their environment and they promote survival of a species.
